New Scientist 13 Oct_ 5

Rewilding is discussed and it seems a return to a more golden age. Then there is the Stanford prison experiment.

We start with a few opinion pieces which in my view raises more worries than they resolve. The first on Gene Drives in that hands of fools seems destine to be a science nightmare sometime soon. The message from Trump against fetal tissue research as a way of getting the point across on abortion and thus win his selected demographic of voters is meant to put stupid scientist in there place. It is real cultural revolution stuff. The anti wind farm movement is similarly unethical. I do like a good concrete article but this advertisement was a blatant BP oil company spin and by rights was so far fetched it really shouldn't be slotted into a science magazine. The story on Ghost populations was on one hand really fascinating but on the other a bit misleading when you drilled down into what it was saying. It really needs to be spread out in separate paragraphs and then logically constructed. Well this all seems to have caught me in a critical mood.

It really stimulates the mind to consider that it is raining dust from Saturn's ring down to the surface of its atmosphere. The fact that it is full of charges and that Saturn's magnetic field is super aligned all adds to a picture of weirdness waiting to be solved. The Galapagos story has information really buried in it like the number of islands (11) and the number of inhabited islands (4). Then there is the real paradox of on one hand conserving the tortoises and on the other making it a lethal tourist attraction.

I always like to think about concrete. There is the history, the chemistry and the environmental pain of the stuff. I appreciate a well written commercial article/advertisement as you know you are getting polished spin. The next article on AI and greenhouse gases is a real tick the box guide to writing science articles. Tucked away in there is the real signs of social change as we hand over the controls to computers.

Nice articles on climate change, however I have ethical issues about using the device of interview to cover a broad range of ideas with out thorough connect of all the ideas. The Hubble is in trouble, I found the mind communication science pretty low quality shameless commercial plug, and as such the speculative waffle pretty hard to swallow. The view that people like positive people and follow negative people seems limited to me as it lumps all people readers into one amorphous category. I also find that this research doesn't really get to grip with what we know about game theory.

Wipe it clean

Yes, it is true, I found out, that you plates and cups are simply wiped clean when you stay in a hotel. Now listen to the agonizing story of an innocent trying not to make an odd situtation into a disaster.

Rocket Quiz

This has arisen from years of teaching with students questioning why the earth is round or how does the atmosphere thin out as we go up. There are many misconceptions too (even among veteran teachers) thinking that rockets just go up vertically yet they have all seen footage of the gravity roll. Finally the drilling of a hole in the ISS is a final bizarre story with key deep implications to humanities romance with the void of space.

Octopus vision is really interesting along with review of David Attinbourgh's latest book. The discussion around the escape ideas from the Grenfell tower disaster was an interesting exercise in visualization and considered arguments. I really like these opportuntites to have a broad spectrum of responses.
