Chasing the Sun 14

Some wacky stories about eclipses. A definite change of pace from the intense historical and social soup of ideas at the cross roads.

The violinist in Antarctica is on the verge of being out there.

I appreciated the story of the 1919 eclipse that built Einstein to super hero status. I am just disturbed by the revelation that Newton also had bending of light it is truly mind jamming.

Chasing the Sun 13

Some of the finer points of science are wrong. The story of Hershel and music is great. There is no evidence I can find that Kant was also a lens grinder.

Chasing the Sun 12

We are back into classic territory here.

This really adds alot to what I have read. Basically there is some wild stuff about Tyco and Kepler which I now realize has to be totally wrong.

I think Bruno is a key figure to understand here, and in depth there was so much going on.

The shocking news for me is that Galileo broke of communication with Kepler because he had a religious belief in circles. It totally fits in if you read enough.

The inquisition needs really to be studied and taken from the theatrical go to of torture and high drama. The text of the 1979 Galileo inquiry surprisingly does the Church a lot of favours.

Kepler using the Pythagorean harmony of the spheres to defend elliptical paths is just simply mind blowing.

The discovery of sunspots meaning we have a pimply sun is awesome, something to imagine how these people thought.

Chasing the Sun 11

This has been very much the one of the most amazing reads for me.

I absolutely love that I am reading a discard book, and it tells the story of our understanding of Arab astronomy being rescued from a Victorian discard box. "Penny a box"

The Prophet gets poisoned by a lamb roast. I did not know that.

A cube, "Kaaba" with a pagan meteor "The Black Stone" in the centre just hurts my head to find out about.

The maths riddles and astronomy puzzles in the Holy book is a really fascinating angle.

I really haven't done the author justice with interruptions and just plain running out of energy. I do however feel that this is so intelligently written that this book is also a phenomena of nature, the presence of which requires some sort of peace to begin to process it.

On closing, I finally gave up and did not do as I should and think and think away. I looked it up and the day night boundary is called the Terminator.

5 Acid Base theories

I honestly think that if you get the arrogance out of teaching, and teach carefully the concepts are not overwhelming. I talk through the various theories, and each has a powerful perspective that is of immense value to the student.

Being a weapons instructor, people not understanding was not an option. It meant in the case of instructing "intellectually mild" students, their questions modified the microscopic details of how you instructed so the brain model you were trying to transfer was clearly laid out on the lab bench.

The exercise of podcast has thrown up heaps of details for me like the finding examples of acid base conjugates. I also can be quite authoritative in that the A + B <-> C + D
Should read AH +B <-> A + HB. Again the IM perspective had the H pass through the +.

I will keep plugging away. Good luck guys.

Practical Projects Update - 5

I found the story of Ricci in China demonstrating the working nature of Western Astronomy by correctly predicting an eclipse after the local effort failed captures the power of authentic science I wish to capture in what I call Ricci projects.

Ricci 1: The Einstein de Haas quantum turner is clicking to the beat. I describe nailing the torsion pendulum with four strands of cotton bottom to top and nestling the ferite in the middle. The solid state relays from an unfortunately named Hong Kong company "Goodbang" will get the neighbors tongues wagging about shipping sex toys. The name is all explained on their web site:"Get a bang for you buck". It is all designed for the return of my favourite power supply. I feel the cosmos as it rocks, others say of course, but I will work on this.

Ricci 2: Thomson tap dancing has just quietly processed itself into existence
. Here is a photo of concept wind, you can hear me flicking through the options as I drive and I am pleased to say it really solved itself when I built the next one while watching the kids in the pool.

Ricci 3: Coming along fine, but the key here is to change modes to float the idea upward.

The real Ricci story puts all of this in the shade.

Chasing the Sun 10

This is just an absolutely amazing chapter on Chinese Astronomy.

The fundamental idea that the heavens reported on the deeds of the people, rather than predicted likely events was just mind blowing. Sort of police/god state gone made.

The politics are so rich, the intrigue so intense. David Cohen is saying the Chinese government is covering up Western traders from 1500 BC. Silk star map caps . . . now this is hard to believe.

The story about Ricci and eunuch and the mis aligned astrolabe was one of the most powerful I had ever heard. I would dismiss it if it weren't so similar to what I have experienced visiting other labs, not the eunuch but the piece of lab equipment out of place or set to the incorrect reading.

The prediction of eclipses was an astounding story.

Educational Finger Food

This is a podcast while walking and I meet builders and an old friend.

I outline the education activity I am working on . It is now morphing into a dual Star wars theme scales of science book for boys, and a whole of world model galaxy for girls.

Actually having done the basics of professional data analysis as one would do in any scientific endevour, having done it with several classes at high school I can see gender patterns but honestly think the stereotyping and the pop airport departure news agency psychology is frankly amateur.

I go into the deconstruction - competitive-sumative and the constructive - cooperative - formative dichotomy but feel that a sound educational approach is create a rich focused experience.

Again, I was planning on another walk so this may be hard to decode. Good luck.

Space SI and Girls Ed

This is probably a very difficult Podcast to follow. Rather than stereotyping and attributing a gender model of behavior, I look at the interaction bandwidth of teaching areas. You have deconstruction of ideas for competitive interaction, while constructive approach allows cooperative learning. Simply put it is good idea to cover both. The Earth as a 1 to a trillion scale galaxy has both concepts built in, but it is going to be hard to sell this advantage to anyone who is the mind that they have all the answers already thank you very much.
